This piece began as just a class assignment to paint hands, but the quiet hours spent completing it in the art studio became an opportunity to meditate on God’s handiwork. Studying reference photos and attempting to render all the creases and folds of the hands gave me a deeper appreciation for the level of detail God created us with and knows us by. As I mixed paints to capture the shifts in color, I marveled at our ability to interpret patterns of light to make sense of images and the world around us. Between the subject matter of human hands transforming yarn or my own enjoyment as I painted, working on this piece reminded me how wonderful it is that God gave us not only the ability to appreciate His creation, but the ability and desire to work and create ourselves.
